CME Common Core Math Resource Page
Greetings CME Math teachers!
NGSSS are now history. Our new standards are called MAFS - Math Florida Standards. Despite what you may have heard, MAFS IS the common core with a few tweaks. Basically, MAFS = Commmon Core. PARCC, Smarter Balanced, and AIR are companies that develop assessments for common core standards. |
I attended a one day MAFS PD this summer and here are a few key takeaways:
1) Most textbooks, including ours, haven't caught up to the common core. Relying solely on the book may be a mistake.
2) Common core standards were developed based on PROGRESSIONS of student knowledge and understanding over time.
3) To teach with "rigor," you must have expert knowledge of the content.
4) We are on our own as far as PD. The district is pushing COLLABORATION in PLC's.
5) There are LOTS of common core resources on the Internet and very few for the Florida Standards.
Search for the common core equivalent of our standards.
6) Math pacing guides will probably be available the first week of August.

I would recommend that you download/print the following documents for your reference:
1) Items specs for your grade level
2) Standards for your grade level
3) CC Standards for Mathematical Practice - absolutely essential - try to adjust your teaching to include these practices.
4) Test design and summary - gives a breakdown of the number of questions in each category or domain.
5) Progressions - to teach with rigor, you need to know what was supposed to be taught last year and next year.
We are going to need to dissect each standard carefully to see what's new, what vocabulary is important, what needs to be reviewed from previous year, and whether or not our textbook resources are sufficient.
Our workgroup spent almost 2 hours trying to figure out how to teach the 5th grade standard that is referenced at the bottom of the page. We determined that the resources in the book weren't good enough.
Appropriate math vocabulary needs to be emphasized consistently and frequently. I don't believe the word "partition" is used in the 4th grade textbook. Partition, however, IS part of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade standards. Honestly, I've never used the word in my class. Now, it would be a mistake not to.

Common Core Progressions and Grade Level Resources:
Here's an example of one of the fifth grade standards.
We're not in Kansas anymore... A Google search for help on OUR standard turned up little. A Google search on the equivalent common core standard yielded LOTS of good information, including the model shown below which will work perfectly on our new Promethean boards. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.B.4.B |
